India's Metro Rail Pipeline in the Taiyo Data Mesh

We count every Mass Transit metro and rail record in Taiyo Canvas for India and the world: how the pipeline splits by stage, who builds and funds it, and what it means for the supply chain.

Search for metro rail in India and the same names keep returning: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Nagpur. What rarely returns in one view is the whole pipeline. In the Taiyo Canvas data mesh, we hold metro and mass transit records across every lifecycle stage, from proposed lines to closed projects, and the scale of that pipeline is larger than most people asking the question expect.

India's metro rail pipeline, by stage

Filtering our Canvas to sector ["Mass Transit"], record_type ["P"] and country ["IND"], we hold 4,190 prospective India projects, 2,416 under construction, 3,529 closed, 127 in failure states and 24 unknown. The prospective bucket is the forward pipeline that contractors and suppliers plan capacity around. The under-construction bucket is where rolling stock, steel and labour demand sit today.

India is one slice of a far larger global picture. Under the same sector and record_type filters, with no country filter applied, we hold 474,180 Mass Transit projects globally, split into 321,496 prospective, 123,886 closed and 24,143 under construction.

Procurement tells a similar story. Adding record_type ["T"] with the India country filter returns 640,187 Mass Transit tenders, of which 492,141 are closed, 147,858 are bidding and 185 are prospective. Live bidding is where a supplier can still act, and that pool is deep. Named records in our coverage include the Chennai Metro Rail Phase 2 Project corridor and the Mumbai Metro Rail II Line 6 project, both carried as closed tenders.

Who sponsors, funds and builds it

Ownership is concentrated. Within India Mass Transit project records, the Ministry of Railways appears on 1,271 records, the Government of India on 687, Indian Railways on 411, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on 289 and the World Bank Group on 182. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority appears on 122 records and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on 109. This is a public-owner market where a small set of agencies carries very large portfolios.

Multilateral lenders sit behind a meaningful share of the pipeline. The Asian Development Bank appears on 18 India Mass Transit project records, the European Investment Bank on 14, the International Finance Corporation on 8, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank on 5 and the State Bank of India on 4.

Contracting clusters around a few firms. Larsen and Toubro Limited appears on 84 records, with another naming variant of the same firm on 15 more. RITES appears on 26, Ircon International Limited on 17, Alstom on 12 and Afcons Infrastructure on 11. In our records that footprint shows up on named assets such as the Bangalore Metro Rail Project Line R6, the Hyderabad Metro, Mumbai Metro Line 3 and Nagpur Metro Phase 2.

What this means for contractors, suppliers and investors

For contractors, the prospective count of 4,190 India records is a bidding calendar, not a forecast. The under-construction count of 2,416 is the near-term backlog where crews, tunnelling and systems packages are already awarded. A firm deciding where to position should weight the prospective bucket by sponsor track record, because the same handful of agencies, led by the Ministry of Railways and Indian Railways, owns most of it.

For suppliers, the tender view matters more than the project view. With 147,858 India Mass Transit tenders in bidding status, component and systems vendors have a live pipeline to qualify against. Rolling stock, signalling and steel demand follow the under-construction bucket with a lag.

For investors and lenders, the funding stack is the tell. The presence of the Asian Development Bank, European Investment Bank, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and International Finance Corporation across these records points to a market that still leans on development finance for the larger corridors. That shapes structuring, tenor and currency risk on any participation.

Looking ahead, we expect the prospective bucket to keep growing as city governments add corridors, and we will keep tracking the record-level shifts as tenders move from bidding to award.

How these numbers were produced

All figures are Taiyo record counts as of today, drawn from the Taiyo Canvas data mesh. Every query carried the filter sector ["Mass Transit"]. Project figures use record_type ["P"]; tender figures use record_type ["T"]. India figures add the country filter country ["IND"]; global figures use the same sector and record_type filters with no country filter. Counts reflect the records Taiyo holds, not every project or tender that exists. We report record counts only, never budget or value sums, because those value totals are not reliable.

The queries behind these figures

Every figure above is a count of records in the Taiyo Data Mesh, returned by one of the queries below on Nov 5, 2026. Counts are records as held in the Data Mesh, not deduplicated projects, and statuses are as recorded at query time. Contract and budget values are not used: summed across sources they mix currencies and include outliers, so they are not reliable as totals.
